Membership in a national patient safety collaborative can reduce patient harm, according to results of a study in the September JAMA Pediatrics of 99 hospitals belonging to the Children's Hospitals' Solutions for Patient Safety network, a Partnership for Patients (P4P) program. Hospitals in the network collaborated on quality improvement measures to reduce hospital-acquired conditions and implemented a safety culture program with ongoing support. Researchers compared improvement rates after membership to those in the year prior to membership while accounting for expected improvement rates that would have occurred without membership. They found significant reductions in three conditions-central catheter-associated bloodstream infections, falls of moderate or greater severity, and monthly rate of adverse drug events immediately after enrollment in the network, as well as in the trend over time (2011 through 2016). Findings support the substantial public investment in P4P collaboratives established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
