Women are more likely to die after heart bypass surgery. Why? A higher prevalence of infection, suggests a recent study in Archives of Internal Medicine. The 100-day mortality rate of 9,218 heart bypass patients was 9.2% for women and 6.4% for men, and women were more likely than men (16.1% vs. 9.8%) to have an infection anywhere in the body during hospitalization. Researchers cited poorer blood glucose control and higher prevalences of malnutrition and immune-related disorders among women with diabetes as possible reasons.
