Father of the Year.David G. Armstrong, DPM, PhD, has been named a recipient of the 2006 Father of the Year Award by the Chicago Father's Day Council and the American Diabetes Association. The 6 winners were selected for their efforts in balancing successful careers while enriching the lives of their families. "Being a father is the most important aspect of my life, which makes this an honor I am extremely proud to receive," said Dr Armstrong, who is Professor of Surgery and Chair of Research and Assistant Dean at the Dr William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Chicago, IL. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Advances in Skin & Wound Care.

 

Survey Says. New survey results released by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons show that patients are never too old for pain-relieving foot surgery. Data from the national survey of 119 patients age 65 and older revealed that 8 in 10 patients who had surgery to relieve foot pain are very satisfied with the outcomes and more than 90% of respondents have little or no pain and are able to pursue more active lifestyles.

Raising awareness.The Skin Cancer Foundation and Doak Dermatologics, a division of Bradley Pharmaceuticals, Inc, Fairfield, NJ, have launched a national initiative to raise awareness of early detection and treatment of skin cancer through a cross-country screening tour. The MDv (mobile diagnosis vehicle) Skin Cancer Screening Tour will offer free screenings for actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Local board-certified dermatologists in each city will perform the screenings.
