When RN colleagues ask me about NP school, I strongly caution them that clinical placement will be a barrier to completing an NP program ("Finding Clinical Placements for NP Students," AJN Reports, June). I feel very fortunate that I was able to get clinical rotations with NPs, certified nurse midwives, MDs, and physician assistants. It was not easy-I only secured these rotations through personal and professional connections.
My advice: If you don't have commitments from clinicians lined up before you start, you should put yourself on a four-to-five-year completion plan. Perhaps join your state NP association and network at events to find an NP who will take pity on you and agree to be your preceptor.
