Dr. Marianne Taft Marcus, a respected scholar in the nursing profession, was a member of the Journal of Addictions Nursing (JAN) Editorial Board for over 17 years, retiring from the Board in 2020. An unassuming humble scholar, Dr. Marcus was a champion of the journal. She regularly attended Editorial Board meetings and consistently contributed her thoughts and suggestions for enhancing the overall quality of JAN.
As busy as she was, she always had time to not only contribute outstanding peer reviews on a regular basis but even offer to complete additional reviews if needed. On at least two occasions, Dr. Marcus mentored novice peer reviewers in completing and submitting a quality review for JAN.
In 2005 (Volume 16, Number 3), Dr. Marcus and her colleague, Dr. Richard L. Brown, MD, MPH, contributed an excellent cutting-edge informative Guest Editorial entitled, "Bringing Basic Substance Use Prevention Services to Mainstream Healthcare." As the Editor in Chief at the time, I received several emails thanking JAN, Dr. Marcus, and Dr. Brown for contributing this important work.
In 2013 (Volume 24, Number 1), Dr. Marcus and her colleague, Dr. Shirley A. Murphy, PhD, RN, FAAN, led a special topic edition of JAN entitled, "Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Addiction Education." Working with both Dr. Marcus and Dr. Murphy, on this edition, was a highlight of my tenure as Editor in Chief. They were consistently efficient, timely, and professional in all their communications. This special issue topic was particularly popular among our readers, primarily due to the timeliness and quality of the articles the two Guest Editors solicited for their edition.
As a role model and mentor to many who had the opportunity to collaborate with her, we are grateful for all her contributions to nursing and addiction science.
