INTRODUCTION
For the 35th anniversary of Advances in Skin & Wound Care, a variety of thought leaders have been invited to share their insight into a range of topics of current interest to the field. In this special installment of Practice Reflections, Editor Emeritus Dr Richard "Sal" Salcido reflects on the "versioning" of the journal and its leadership over time.
THE RETROSPECTOSCOPE
This invited contemporaneous reflection is linked to the 35th anniversary of Advances in Skin & Wound Care (ASWC). Although previous epochs have celebrated the significant anniversaries of the journal, this reflective commentary refers to the period from 2018 to 2022, or what I am calling "version 3.5" of ASWC.
Reflecting on the journal's leadership over the last 35 years, this author is honored to be among the editors-in-chief who have served. Over time, the journal has iterated, beginning with its initial version 1.0 title, Decubitus (1988 to 1990). In 1990, a tagline was added: The Journal of Skin Ulcers. In 1994, the title evolved to Advances in Wound Care: The Journal for Prevention and Healing (version 2.0). Finally, in 2000, version 3.0 went live: Advances in Skin & Wound Care: The International Journal for Prevention and Healing.
In 2018, after I had the privilege to serve two decades as the editor-in-chief (version 1.0 to 3.0),1 a superb and dynamic team was promoted from clinical editors to co-editors-in-chief, assuming the leadership of the journal for version 3.5: Dr Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN, and Dr Gary Sibbald, BSc, MD, DSc (Hons), MEd, FRCPC (Med Derm), FAAD, MAPWCA. These two clinicians provide a substantial nexus to the future, and both are highly esteemed authors, consultants, practitioners, educators, colleagues, and global diplomats in the wound care space. It is an honor to follow their lead as they implement their new forward-looking plans, goals, and agendas to take Advances in Skin & Wound Care to an even higher level. The editorial team including Daniella Thoren, Publisher; Chloe Falkinson, MPub, Editorial Director; and Editor Holly Bunje has further transformed the journal.
Previous versions of ASWC's development have been well-chronicled, from the 15th anniversary to the 35th,2 and this "revisionist history" now incorporates my recent observations of this transformative version of the journal-through the multifocal lens of an author, mentee, peer reviewer, Editorial Advisory Board member, mentor, editorial team member, and Editor Emeritus. My station inspires my more recent reflections of ASWC as an avid reader of the journal's content and format.
In medical journalism, visual elements and aesthetics are essential. Visual aesthetics include the key elements of color, shape, pattern, line, texture, visual weight, balance, scale, proximity, and movement. The ASWC version 3.5 has significantly evolved in its creativity, including less reliance on in-person conferences and looking forward to the evolution of contemporary modalities such as Online Exclusives, podcasts and videocasts (interviews with thought and content leaders), rebranded departments, and enhanced perspectives on Nursing Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Medical Education articles. These new editorial elements will help us achieve pleasing visual aesthetics and style, and I would be remiss not to emphasize the aesthetics and proprioceptive sensation of the journal itself; over all 12 issues each year, its weight is constant.
And finally, I congratulate the team on the upward trajectory of the journal's impact factor! I look forward to receiving and partaking in the journal's editorial thought, content, and transdisciplinary character. Coalescing a highly effective team has led to the best version yet.
