Abstract
Advancements in healthcare are extending the lives of individuals with dementia, and rehabilitation services are needed to address skills and abilities needed to maintain function and independence as long as possible. Individuals with dementia have the capability for learning when information is presented using specific strategies, tools, and techniques. Rehabilitation professionals should capitalize on implicit memory, use of specific cueing methods, error-free learning situations, use of external devices and environmental modification, and facilitory communication techniques. Rehabilitation professionals must also advocate for therapy for this group and increase awareness of the benefits that can be obtained by individuals with dementia.
