A fast, accurate device that lets patients measure hemoglobin A1C levels at home has received Food and Drug Administration approval. The pager-sized monitor, which measures both A1C and total hemoglobin, activates when the patient applies a finger-stick blood sample to its sample port. Results appear within 8 minutes.

Easy to use, the device requires no test strips or maintenance. Its accuracy is similar to that of lab test results, which may not be available for several days. Using it at the bedside or in an outpatient setting, you can discuss findings with your patient on the spot and adjust antidiabetic medication as indicated.
