Periodically, Infants & Young Children (IYC) publishes special issues dedicated exclusively to a topic of major concern to the field. Special issues provide IYC with a unique opportunity for a comprehensive and in-depth discussion, addressing a topic from multiple points of view. It also gives our readership a single place to go to when seeking the most current information about a particular topic.

This special issue on Professional Training in Infant Mental Health reflects recognition of an increasingly important and complex area in the field of early intervention. Of considerable importance are the linkages that need to be established at every level to address the mental health needs of vulnerable young children and their families and, as emphasized in this issue, the various professional training needs and paradigms. Indeed, it is suggested, in no uncertain terms in this special issue, that our support of the social and emotional well-being of vulnerable young children and their families can be successful only with contributions from professionals from multiple disciplines. As this is a major rationale for IYC, such a special issue is highly appropriate.

Dr Donna R. Weston, the special issue editor, and her colleagues have done a remarkable job in capturing the essential elements in this exciting field with respect to professional training, and in serving as catalysts for change. I formally thank them for all their hard work, their extraordinary insights, and the obvious passion that they bring to this topic.
