OSHA issues new guidelines to protect health care workers exposed to COVID-19. The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a new emergency temporary standard to protect health care workers exposed to the "grave danger" of caring for patients with COVID-19 (see http://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA4122.pdf). The standard requires employers to develop and implement an effective written COVID-19 plan and provide policies and resources related to personal protective equipment, social distancing, ventilation, transmission precautions, physical barriers, cleaning and disinfection, and patient and visitor screening and management. The new rules also require that employers provide health screening and management for workers, including time off for vaccinations and paid leave for vaccination side effects. Additionally, infected or contagious health care workers who cannot work remotely must receive paid leave time. The temporary standard will remain in effect until COVID-19 no longer poses a threat to workers.
