According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, nearly 50,000 people in the United States died from opioid-involved overdoses in 2019. Opioids have a place in treating severe short-term pain and some chronic pain conditions, but unused opioids pose a health risk if kept where others, including teens, young children, and pets, can find and ingest them. The Food and Drug Administration's website has a free resources toolkit available to educate patients on the safe disposal of opioids. The toolkit includes video, radio, and print public service announcements; posters and postcards; fact sheets for distribution; social media graphics and posts; and sample content that can be added to e-mails, newsletters, or other forms of outreach.
