Abstract
This study compared the quality of life in older and younger African American patients receiving hemodialysis using the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index (FPQLI) of Dialysis. Ninety-eight participants were subgrouped into 4 categories by age and were administered the FPQLI. One-way analyses of variance were used to analyze the data. Reported quality of life improved with age for all except one of the quality-of-life indices, with one index yielding a significant difference. This suggested that older chronically ill patients tend to exhibit a greater level of comfort with their health and social status.
