Most hospitals have banned smoking inside their facilities and within 30 feet of any entrance, but some are going even further by banning smoking anywhere on the property-even inside cars in the parking lot. For example, the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio has banned smoking on its main campus and on any of its 37 locations in Ohio and Florida. According to the nonprofit group Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights, at least 115 of the nation's 5,754 hospitals have campuswide smoking bans.
Hospitals that institute these bans generally support and help staff stop smoking. To help the 25% of its employees who smoke and want to quit, the Cleveland Clinic has created the "Smash the Ash" program that includes cessation programs and a free nicotine replacement aid kit.
