I was pleased to see the Practice Errors column "Body Art and MRI" (March), but I'm concerned that the authors recommend stocking needle-nose pliers to remove larger-gauge jewelry. Use of needle-nose pliers can damage jewelry or cause trauma to the piercing site. Snap-ring pliers are specifically designed for jewelry removal and should be used (see photo below). All facilities, including EDs and surgical departments, should have snap-ring pliers available to care for patients with piercings.
