Growing concern about the risk of 'long COVID' in children. Children have complained of fatigue, muscle and joint pain, insomnia, and respiratory and cardiac symptoms up to four months after having COVID-19. Data from the United Kingdom Coronavirus Infection Survey found that 13% of children under the age of 11 and 15% of children ages 12 to 16 years continued to have at least one symptom five weeks after testing positive for COVID-19. An even higher prevalence was found in a medRxiv preprint study of 129 pediatric patients in Italy with positive COVID-19 tests. More than half reported at least one persistent symptom up to 120 days after recovering from illness, with 43% experiencing symptoms that impaired their daily activities. Though serious illness is rare among children with COVID-19, the potential for significant long-term harm calls for urgent attention.
