While the clinical importance of individualized genetic treatments is emphasized in precision medicine, the focus of "precision health" is on tailored approaches that embrace behavioral, environmental, and individual lifestyle factors (Hacker et al., 2019; Lyles et al., 2018). Precision health allows nurse scientists to shift their focus from group-centered care to individual-centered care. However, the influence of the nursing role on the effectiveness of precision health is just beginning to be recognized. Technology development in the realm of nursing (E-health), analysis of existing big data, the implementation of patient-needs-based nursing care, and genetic testing will be critical to achieving the goals of precision health.
In this issue of The Journal of Nursing Research, the article Mobile-Application-Based Interventions for Patients with Hypertension and Ischemic Heart Disease: A Systematic Review demonstrates a smartphone application as a feasible E-health solution in patient care. With respect to big data analysis, a systematic review and a meta-analysis, respectively entitled A Systematic Review of Behavioral Outcomes for Leadership Interventions among Health Professionals and Effects of Patient Activation Intervention on Chronic Diseases: A Meta-Analysis, help promote the advancement of precision health by highlighting its contributions to clinical practice. With regard to the implementation of individualized nursing care, this issue includes two articles entitled Effects of an Active Music Therapy Program on Functional Fitness in Community Older Adults and Effects of Predischarge Patient Education Combined With Postdischarge Follow-Ups on Self-Care, Readmission, Sleep, and Depression in Patients With Heart Failure that provide clinical evidence that clinical nurses may reference in facing patients with various needs.
To provide clinical nurses with the best treatment guide, nurse scientists should develop tailored, patient-needs-based nursing care using the E-health approach, genetic testing, and big data analysis.
