I often speak with nurses from across the country and around the world, and I find one thing we all want is a work setting that values nurses and empowers staff-and has leaders that embrace this philosophy. But we all know that doesn't always happen. So if you're thinking about making a career move to travel nursing, work with an agency that will help you match your needs in a setting that supports excellence in nursing. Take the time to find out about nursing practice in the assignments you're offered. Ask questions about staffing levels and nurse involvement in practice decisions. Are nurses active on committees throughout the hospital? Do nurses help determine how they practice? How are nursing practice changes made? Does the setting embrace collaborative practice? Do medical and nursing staff have a collegial relationship?
Even if you don't participate in the committees that staff nurses who work there do, you'll be exposed to the workplace culture and values. So why not look for an environment that prizes its nurses? Why not seek an opportunity at a facility where your professional commitment will be respected and your career plans fueled? After all, nurses are in demand, and those who are willing to travel can find great opportunities for professional growth.
Before you set sail for a rewarding travel career, make investigating the work environment and culture one of your priorities and find the best place for you.
