As of January 2005, the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB) is offering a new certification credential to registered nurses (RNs) who perform foot and nail care. The new credential is Certified Foot Care Nurse (CFCN).

Many RNs provide basic foot and nail care in acute care and long-term-care facilities, as well as in the home care setting. Based on a survey of nearly 1500 RNs who provide this care, the WOCNCB decided to develop test specifications that could lead to a certification examination. A foot and nail advisory panel was polled to determine eligibility and educational preparation requirements for the certification examination and to begin test construction.

The CFCN credential was launched following completion of the examination content. To be eligible for the examination, candidates must have a current RN license and must complete either:

* a formal foot and nail program, including 5 hours of didactic and 3 hours of clinical practice with direct foot and nail care, or

* an experiential pathway, including 5 hours of continuing education and 3 hours of clinical practice (under the supervision of an expert).
