Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that is strongly associated with cardiovascular diseases and, if untreated, contributes to overall increased healthcare costs in the heart failure client population. Prompt diagnoses and treatment of this condition will significantly contribute not only to increased quality of life but also to cost-effective outcomes.
This poster presentation focuses on the development of an algorithm for the clinical nurse specialist and other mid-level providers to assist in identification and treatment of the at-risk OSA population. This algorithm is derived from various research studies supporting prompt and accurate diagnosing and treatments of OSA cardiovascular clients. Recognition of risk factors and symptoms is an essential skill for the clinical nurse specialist in designing interventions and determining outcomes.
This algorithm will be tested in a pilot sample size of no less than 10 clients by the time the presentation is made. Results of the piloting testing of this algorithm at a Congestive Heart Failure Clinic in the mid-west will be presented. The clinical nurse specialist will identify all new clients and initiate all care, referrals, and follow-ups as directed by the algorithm. Findings anticipated are that the use of this algorithm will facilitate prompt and accurate diagnosing to facilitate proper treatment for OSA in the congestive heart failure client population. Implication of the use of this algorithm in preventing cardiovascular compromises in the at-risk population will be addressed.
