Many studies have shown a contributing factor to the nursing shortage is the burnout of the present work force. According to the Department of Health and Safety, only 69.5% of nurses are moderately satisfied with their job, versus the general population which was found to have 85% satisfaction. Nursing must work hard to overcome these statistics by fanning the flame to avoid burnout. We must maintain the joy and enthusiasm in nursing.

This presentation will address why nurse burn out occurs as well as options to combat burnout, by thinking outside the box. Alternatives to traditional scheduling, developing education to spark a flame of enthusiasm, changing traditional orientations to spark a flame in the new endoscopy nurse, and combatting the negatives and accentuating the positives will also be discussed.

The diversity of these topics certainly reflects the richness and breadth of our specialty.
