Esophageal manometry is often performed in the presence of a physician, without the manometrist having a good understanding of the motility problems associated with the esophagus. This didactic presentation will begin with an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the esophagus. A review of esophageal manometry will be discussed. Indications for Esophageal manometry will be given. Case presentations for hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter, achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and other swallowing difficulties will be evaluated. The implications of the findings will also be covered. Finally, the controversies of provocative medication used during esophageal manometry will be presented.
