This topic will focus on a review of the history of gastrointestinal nursing. It will look at the evolution of the role from the beginning to many roles held today. Originally, the gastrointestinal nurse was an available nurse pulled from the operating room or emergency room to assist in endoscopic procedures. Now the roles have grown and expanded, as our passion in this area has driven us forward and helped us expand these roles. Gastroenterology nurses are now used as educators, researchers, nurse endoscopists, and in many other varied roles. The purpose of this presentation is to look at our passion for gastroenterology nursing and decide what role we want to be playing in the specialty's future.
