The endoscopic environment requires the use of many chemical products. The variety of chemistries used ranges from chemicals for processing endoscopic equipment to those used for disinfection of environmental surfaces. Specifically, these chemistries include enzymes, detergents, glutaraldehyde-type chemistries, peracetic acid, and environmental disinfectants. Often, the selection of these chemistries is decided outside the auspices of the department. Use of these chemistries has the potential to damage or effect the life of medical devices if they are not used correctly.
The gastroenterology manager needs to be knowledgeable about all these products to ensure the safety of patients, employees, instrumentation, and environment. In this presentation, each type of product will be discussed regarding the mode of action, application, efficiency, and efficacy. Suggestions for monitoring how products are used by the staff and the need for the annual review will also be discussed.
