BARRx is a randomized multicenter trial of radiofrequency ablation of specialized intestinal metaplasia of the esophagus using a balloon-based bipolar electrode array. The goal is to evaluate the tolerability, safety, and efficacy of this novel approach. Subjects are followed via serial biopsies at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. They are also on Nexium as part of the study.
This presentation will provide an overview of Barrett's esophagus; describe why the research study was done; highlight the criteria for sample selection; and discuss the research methods, ongoing study results, and preliminary conclusions. The presentation is of interest to all levels of practice and addresses a variety of settings, from the ambulatory setting to an inpatient setting.
