As editor-in-chief of Plastic Surgical Nursing (PSN), the official journal of the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN), I am pleased to let you know that we have adopted a new mission statement for our journal that says,
The mission of Plastic Surgical Nursing is to promote education, competence, and professional development of plastic and aesthetic nurses by publishing peer-reviewed and evidence-based information, research, and dialogue about professional issues while maintaining the highest standards of journal excellence and integrity.
I am also proud to let you know that data from our 2020 publisher's report shows that PSN is in 55 countries around the world! Since 2019, the number of unique visitors to our journal Web site (http://www.psnjournalonline.com) has increased by 41%. The top 10 articles viewed on the journal Web site are depicted in Table 1. One additional point of interest is that PSN is one of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins top 10 journals for continuing education credits!
Speaking of continuing education credits (CEUs), this issue includes two CEU articles! In the first CEU article, Van Wicklin and Maio (2020) report on the recent ISPAN survey about the perceived value of certification of plastic and aesthetic nurses. In the second CEU article the new "Fundamentals of Plastic Surgery Nursing Practice" and "Fundamentals of Aesthetic Nursing Practice" columns have been combined into a single column discussing how registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice RNs can determine whether a particular task is within their scope of practice (Van Wicklin, 2020a).
I am pleased to announce that Rachel Varga, BScN, RN, CANS, is a new member of the PSN Editorial Board and has also agreed to serve as a member of our manuscript review panel! In addition to Rachel, we also have added the following individuals to our manuscript review panel:
* Teresa M. Barroca, MSN, RN, CPSN
* Leslie Fletcher, MSN, RN, AGNP-BC
* Esther M. Johnstone, DNP, MSN, RN, CNOR
* Arleen More O'Ferrall, MSN, FNP
* Alberto Sanchez-Garcia, MD
* Heather Scarborough, ASN, RN
Thanks so much to each of you! We are thrilled to have you on our PSN team!
But there's more!! In addition to this extremely informative Letter From the Editor and the two Nursing Continuing Professional Development offerings, this issue of PSN contains other interesting and enlightening articles. You have the opportunity to read the inspiring messages provided by our newly elected ISPAN President, Gerri Obe, and by Renee Hinojosa, President of our Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board (PSNCB) (Hinojosa, 2020; Obi, 2020). The new Evidence Review column discusses evidence about the single incision minimally invasive (SIMI) neck life (Van Wicklin, 2020b). The new I Have a Question! column explains the way that nursing credentials should be displayed (Van Wicklin, 2020c). There is also a thought-provoking article by Lupon et al. (2020) that discusses the perception of plastic surgery by community-based private practice nurses in France, an article by Thione et al. (2020) that describes their protocol for performing reconstructive microsurgery on patients with COVID-19, and an article by Drury et al. (2020) that reviews the readability of outpatient plastic surgery letters. Also included in this issue are two fascinating department-specific articles. Relative to reconstruction, Vanaclocha, Orts, Rubio, and Sanchez-Garcia (2020) present a review of factors associated with increased complications in patients with BRCA gene mutations undergoing reconstructive breast surgery and relative to wound care, Alonso-Carpio, Sanchez-Garcia, Trapero, Ruiz Valls, and Pardo (2020) report on a soft-tissue sarcoma as a potential differential diagnosis of an exophytic soft-tissue mass.
But there's still more!! For your review and enjoyment, we have also included reprints of two previously published articles, titled "Working Out the Woes: An Analysis of the Impact of Exercise on Depression" (Anderson, Dorris, Littles, Rodriguez, & Spear, 2015) and "Compassion Fatigue: Strategies for Minimizing Impact on Aesthetic Medical Providers" (Brennan, 2020).
All of this great reading should keep you busy until our next issue! Enjoy!
Respectfully,
Sharon Ann Van Wicklin, PhD, RN, CNOR, CRNFA(E),
