Yoga is a system of integrating and balancing body, mind, emotion, and spirit. It is a popular way of relieving stress that offers a sense of relaxation and tranquility to counterbalance stress on a long-term basis. The practice of stress reduction techniques is a learned skill. The more you practice, the better you will become at identifying and reducing stress in your life. To reduce stress and improve performance on high-stakes examinations, nursing students are taught alternative stress reduction techniques in their senior year. Stress reduction techniques include yoga poses and breathing, positive affirmations, acupressure points, aroma therapy, music, essential oils, light therapy, and a visualization meditation. The lesson begins with students setting an intention for the class of gaining personal knowledge and trying at least 1 activity in their daily lives. The yoga poses can be performed while seated in a chair and can be used during high-stakes testing. Positive affirmations are practiced in class while students look at themselves in the mirror. These short positive statements help focus on goals and get rid of negative, self-defeating beliefs. Students then work in pairs to practice acupressure points to relieve anxiety and nervousness. The class concludes with a visualization meditation during Savasana, a yoga relaxation pose. The lesson is well received and anticipated by students. Improved health and long-term stress relief may be accomplished through adherence and daily practice of alternative therapies such as the ones learned in this class.
