The role of the clinical nurse leader (CNL) encompasses many areas. While CNLs often work within a microsystem affecting change within their population, this CNL's role includes Lean Data Analyst responsibilities that impact change over several populations. The neurosciences division recognized the advantages of a CNL analyzing, interpreting, and presenting the data to the team to guide practice change. Encompassing the many areas of expertise of the CNL, such as clinician, educator, outcomes manager, and information manager, the CNL is poised to provide in-depth and useful data analytics to improve patient outcomes and decrease overall length of stay (LOS) within the division. Lean tools such as Gate Charts and Pareto charts have made it easy to synthesize data and provide useful instruments to determine opportunities within the division. The opportunities that result when analyzing these charts provide staff and leadership with focused problems for which to develop and implement containments and countermeasures. Data are collected and disseminated within several platforms in the division such as compiling data for use in Managing Daily Initiative huddles, staff audits of Care Experience Bundle elements, and Managing Weekly Initiative huddles, which are used to keep senior leadership abreast of initiatives and resource needs within the division. Year-to-date, these initiatives have saved more than 450 opportunity days (observed LOS days minus expected LOS days compared with the previous year) within our system's neurosciences division. The CNL is a valuable asset in many different facets of patient care improvements and cost-saving initiatives, and this value does not stop at the bedside.
