As a clinical nurse leader (CNL) in the operating room, I was deployed to the Medical Branch of Incident Command during the COVID-19 pandemic when elective surgical procedures were canceled. I was able to impact the facility by providing leadership as the co-chair of the Clinical Workflow Group and member of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Workgroup. With a background only in operating room nursing, I relied on my CNL training to provide support and guidance in nearly every microsystem in the facility. The unprecedented pandemic created situations for which there was no guidance. Policies and processes for the management of Veterans with COVID-19 were needed, training had to be conducted for the proper donning and doffing of PPE to minimize the spread of infection and protect staff, and guidance had to be issued to all areas from transporters and environmental management services to inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and social work. I performed extensive research for best practices related to COVID-19 and incorporated them into our policies, memorandums, and processes. I also took measures to ensure all affected parties were educated on the processes through in-person training, communication with unit managers, language in the Daily COVID-19 Employee Update email, and messages disseminated through Incident Command.
