Abstract
Over 50% of US adults use dietary supplements regularly, a trend fueled by changes in dietary supplement labeling regulation in the mid-1990s. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) are increasingly asked to assess use and make clinical recommendations regarding dietary supplements in an effort to optimize health and prevent harm. To meet this challenge, HCPs should develop an evidence-based resource library, thoroughly assess dietary supplement use in all patients/clients, evaluate efficacy and safety of each dietary supplement as part of a complete nutrition assessment, make appropriate and specific recommendations for use or discontinuation, document recommendations, and develop a focused plan for reevaluation.
