On the road this winter? If winter storms are a possibility in your area, keep this advice in mind:
* Listen for travel warnings.
* Avoid icy roads if possible.
* Use tire chains.
* Let someone know where you're going and when you expect to arrive. Ask him to notify help if you're late.
* Check and restock emergency supplies in your car before you leave.
* Avoid pouring water on your ice-covered windshield to clear it; it could shatter.
* Stay in the car. Don't try to walk for help unless it's visible within 100 yards.
* Signal for help by displaying a "Call for help" sign, raising the car hood, or hanging a brightly colored cloth on the antenna.
* To keep warm, turn on the car's engine for about 10 minutes each hour.
* Use the heater and car lights only when the car's running to avoid running down the battery.
* Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
* Open a window slightly for fresh air.
* Do light exercises to stay warm.
* If you're alone, stay awake as much as possible; if you're with someone, take turns sleeping and huddle together for warmth.
* Conserve body heat by wrapping your body and head with extra clothes, blankets, newspapers, maps, or car mats.
* Don't eat snow. (It lowers your body temperature.)
