A new federal order allows pharmacists in all 50 states to give childhood vaccinations without a physician's order. Pharmacists must complete a training program and can only give vaccinations to children ages three years and older. The new law overrides regulations in the 22 states that currently do not allow licensed pharmacists to administer childhood vaccinations. The order is temporary, put in place to help turn around the precipitous drop in childhood vaccinations during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement criticizing the measure, stating that it is "incredibly misguided," and that pediatricians' offices are open and are the "best, safest place for children to get vaccinated."
