Nurses across varied settings were still experiencing significant shortages of PPE during July and August. In a survey conducted by the American Nurses Association, half of the 21,000 nurse respondents reported having treated a patient with or suspected of having COVID-19 in the previous two weeks. The percentage of nurses who experienced a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) decreased slightly to 42% from 45% in May, with 16% reporting widespread shortages. While there were shortages of all types of PPE, N95 masks were in the shortest supply. Two-thirds of the nurses were required to reuse N95 masks and 88% were encouraged to do so, with more than half reusing them many times, in some cases up to two weeks. Staff nurses and those working in long-term care or hospice reported the worst shortages.
