Bringing realism into my 2-hour lesson on burn care was challenging until I found an online library of video resources developed by providers from the Burn Center at the University of Washington (UW) and Harborview Medical Center. The UW Burn Center hosts 17 online educational videos for health care providers. Case scenarios depicting a middle-aged and an older adult man, with differing burn injuries, medical history, and cultural and religious backgrounds were developed. The case scenarios walked students through the nursing care of these patients beginning at the time of the burn injury through the rehabilitation phase. Sections from the students' medical-surgical textbook and the Burn Assessment, Burns 101, and Burns in the OR videos were embedded into the class discussion and small group work on the case scenarios. The narrated videos, ranging between 4 and 7 minutes each, illustrated health care providers caring for burn patients. Students later performed well on NCLEX-style test items on burn care. Additional videos discuss burn biology, triage, excision, escharotomy, grafting, donor sites, ace wrapping, splinting, and pediatric and outpatient care.
