It is essential that students carry forward fundamental skills into all clinical experiences. Many of the concepts taught at the fundamental level incorporate safety and patient comfort as priorities of care. Using the skills laboratory, educators developed an escape room, which focused on essential principles of safety and patient comfort in the acute care setting. The escape room was developed to provide an opportunity for students to engage in active learning while recalling key concepts related to falls prevention, infection control, restraint utilization, assessment, pain management, and medication administration. Students worked in small teams with friendly competition among the groups to see who would be the quickest to solve the puzzles and "escape" the skills laboratory. At the beginning, students were presented a client scenario that led them to multiple prompts and clues. Ultimately, the students were presented with an order for PRN (as needed) pain medication. Calculating and preparing the right dose allowed them to escape the skills laboratory. The escape room included crossword puzzles, a scavenger hunt, medication preparation, and identification of essential equipment. Each of these prompts was designed to incorporate team work and critical thinking. This activity provided a review of important principles that carry into most clinical settings used in prelicensure programs. Although designed for prelicensure students, this activity is transferable to other areas of practice and clinical settings.
