Inappropriate presurgical antibiotic use is common in children. A recent study of 32 hospitals showed continued inappropriate administration of prophylactic antibiotics before surgery in the pediatric population. The latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines recommend against use of perioperative prophylactic antibiotics for low-risk cases. In this study, published online March 4 in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, 33% of surgical prophylactic antibiotic use in this population was found to be inappropriate. The most common inappropriate use was for surgical prophylaxis exceeding 24 hours' duration. Antibiotics were inappropriately used most frequently in ear, nose, and throat cases. The most frequently prescribed antibiotic was cefazolin.
