2005 Call for Nominations
HPNA is looking for energetic, experienced hospice and palliative nurses to serve on the board of directors. The association proudly serves as the voice for nearly 7000 nurses providing quality end-of-life care.
Board terms are for 3 years. Director obligations include attendance, at a minimum, of 4 board meetings a year, and some committee participation. Expenses related to board and committee participation are reimbursed. No other remuneration is offered.
If you are a voting member of HPNA and want to be considered for the Board of Directors, submit the following information received no later than March 1, 2005, to Chair, Nominating Committee, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, 1 Penn Center W, Suite 229, Pittsburgh, PA 15276
1. A 1-page letter stating your willingness to serve. Include in the letter (in 250 words or less) your goals for the association and the experiences you have that will make you an asset to the board. If you are put on the ballot, the 250-word paragraph will be viewed by HPNA membership for voting purposes.
2. A resume with current address and telephone number.
3. Two letters of recommendation. (References may be contacted by the nominating committee.)

The HPN Foundation Florence Wald Fellows Program
The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of its Florence Wald Fellows Program. Established in honor of Florence S. Wald, MN, MS, FAAN, this distinguished program offers foundation donors a special opportunity to demonstrate their strong commitment to quality end-of-life care. Florence Wald Fellows pledge to contribute a total of $10,000 to the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation over the course of a maximum of 5 years, ensuring the availability of funds for education and research among nurses and healthcare professionals of both today and tomorrow, while honoring HPNA's "mother of hospice and palliative care" principles. In January 2004, Dr Wald became the first recipient of the HPNA "Leading the Way" award. Florence Wald Fellows are recognized by the foundation in a variety of ways.
Inspired by Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of St. Christopher's in England, Dr Wald led the way of converting the English hospice philosophy to an American reality. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a bachelor of arts degree in 1938, and in 1941 she received a master's degree in nursing from Yale University School of Nursing. She holds 3 degrees from Yale University, an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Bridgeport, and an honorary Doctor of Human Letters from Mt. Holyoke College.
Dr Wald helped create Hospice Incorporated in Branford, Connecticut, the first hospice in the United States, and she was honored with the title of "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing. She is an American Nurses Association Hall of Fame, National Women's Hall of Fame, and Connecticut Hall of Fame inductee. She is also a Yale School of Nursing Distinguished Alumna, Distinguished Woman of Connecticut, American Hospice Association and Connecticut Nurses Association recipient. Dr Wald has also published widely and has earned many other distinctions.

Teleconferences
In 2005, HPNA will sponsor 3 teleconferences a month. The first Wednesday (12 noon-1 PM ET) is for advanced practice nurses and contains information about advanced practice, including pharmacology when indicated. The second Wednesday (12 noon-1 PM ET) is for clinical nursing. The clinical nursing teleconferences provide information to assist the bedside registered or licensed practical/vocational nurse to keep current. The fourth Wednesday (3:00-3:30 PM ET) is for nursing assistants. The NA teleconferences can be used as in-services for a group or for the individual on current end-of-life topics.
After teleconferences air, the material, including the audio and the transcript, is available for purchase on a CD. The CDs can be played in a car CD player. The transcripts and posttests for CEs are also available in the "Members Only" section of HPNA's Web site.

Announcement of 2004 NA CD Collection
Beginning January 2005, HPNA offers the 2004 NA Collection the 2004 Nursing Assistant Teleconference CD-ROMs (11 programs total) and the 4 lead articles from the 2004 quarterly HPNA Nursing Assistant Newsletters packaged together in an embossed leatherette case. The 2004 NA Collection is $300.00. Orders will be processed after January 1, 2005.
Each CD-ROM contains the specific program transcript, handout, and certificate of participation and an audio copy of the presentation. Sold separately, each CD-ROM is valued at $30.00. (Total cost would be $360.00 for a savings to you of $60.00.)

Congratulations
NBCHPN(R) would like to congratulate all the APNs, RNs, and NAs who sat for and passed the examinations in 2004. The numbers of passing candidates are as follows:
First National Hospice and Palliative Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse Examination Administered
In 2003, work was initiated on development of a hospice and palliative certification examination for licensed practical/vocational nurses. The first national examination was administered on September 18, 2004.
Two hundred two LP/VNs successfully passed the inaugural examination. NBCHPN(R) now proudly provides certification on all four levels of nursing practice: APN, RN, LP/VN, and NA.
