Akers Biosciences Inc. (Thorofare, NJ) received FDA approval to market its rapid test for heparin/platelet factor 4 (HPF-4) antibodies. The HealthTEST HPF-4 Antibody Assay test is designed to identify patients at risk for developing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome (HITTS).

The HealthTEST HPF-4 Antibody Assay is a rapid manual assay that can be easily performed when immediate results are needed. The methods currently available to detect HITTS take many hours to perform and are primarily used to confirm HITTS after the symptoms are already apparent in a patient.
