Abstract

Although there is ample research-based evidence regarding indwelling urinary catheter management in acute and long-term care settings, there is limited home care information. This article describes how a home health agency, using available research and then extrapolating and applying it to home care, implemented a successful catheter management program.

Hackensack University Medical Center Home Health Agency (HUMC) is among the largest certified home health agencies in New Jersey, providing community-based services to more than 10,000 patients annually. The present climate of limited fiscal and human resources necessitate an efficient and cost-effective use of all services to remain viable, including initiatives in urinary catheter management.
