Measles claims more than twice as many lives as Ebola in the Congo. While the Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo claimed worldwide attention in 2019, UNICEF reports that more than 5,000 people there have died from measles, 90% of whom were children under five years of age. According to the World Health Organization, measles last year was the largest and fastest-moving epidemic, with more than 440,000 cases worldwide. Significant outbreaks occurred in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, a setback for vaccination efforts that reduced global deaths from measles by 73% between 2000 and 2018. Prevention programs can be undermined by violence and misinformation. In Samoa last year, public health efforts suffered when two babies died following vaccination. Widespread avoidance of vaccination following the tragedy created conditions for a serious outbreak of measles that went unchecked for months.
