UK journals to ban ads for infant formula.BMJ and its sister publications (including Gut, Frontline Gastroenterology, and Archives of Diseases in Childhood) will no longer accept ads for infant formula and other breast milk substitutes. After decades of publishing these ads, the decision was made because of renewed concerns "over the aggressive promotion of these products and the harmful effect on global rates of breastfeeding," stated a BMJ editorial announcing the ban. The ban does not represent a campaign against formula; the editors-in-chief of the journals, who authored the editorial, noted that they recognize the need for formula when women cannot breastfeed and for children with medical or nutritional indications for formula. The ban will take effect later this year after current advertising contracts expire.
