As the nurse in my family and having been involved in the care needs of my elderly parents, I can relate to "Family Caregivers and the Decisions They Make" (Editorial, March). Because there is such limited time for nurses to teach family caregivers how to care for their loved ones after discharge, it is imperative that nurses be aware of community resources and make appropriate referrals to certified home health agencies when patients are discharged. Visiting nurses not only lend support to caregivers but can teach them the complex procedures that caregivers are so often called upon to do. These nurses make sure that caregivers can perform return demonstrations to ensure that procedures are being performed appropriately.
