Crisis pregnancy centers pose risks to vulnerable women, according to a new position statement. The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) and the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG) released a position statement addressing the risks posed by crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs). According to the statement, published in the December 2019 Journal of Adolescent Health, CPCs offer unethical and medically questionable reproductive health care to vulnerable women, such as teenagers, people of color, and those with low incomes. Presenting themselves as health care clinics, CPCs "provide biased, limited, and inaccurate health information, including incomplete pregnancy options counseling and unscientific sexual and reproductive health information," the statement says. Most CPCs are affiliated with religious organizations that prioritize religious beliefs over evidence-based medical guidelines. The SAHM and NASPAG "support regulation and action to address CPCs' lack of adherence to medical and ethical practice standards and prevent potential harms caused" by their practices.
