Abstract
This study examined the association between depression and selected nutritional factors in community-dwelling older women. Recruitment was based on a cross-sectional design using convenience sampling. Depression was determined using the Geriatric Depression Scale. Ten of 33 participants were depressed. Compared to the nondepressed subjects, the depressed subjects had significantly lower levels of total omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and omega-6 (n-6) PUFAs in red blood cells. The depressed group tended to have lower serum vitamin B12 level (P = .0575). No difference was found in blood folate and total cholesterol between the 2 groups. This study found that depressed older women had lower levels of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs in red blood cells.
