Abstract

Oral sensory impairment is an often-overlooked deficit experienced by patients with neurogenic disorders. This article reviews the significance of oral sensory input in the process of swallowing and discusses the impact that impairment will have on an individual's ability to move food through the oral cavity and swallow. Suggestions for increasing oral sensitivity will add to the enjoyment of eating and may help to remediate the swallow in the neurogenic population.
