This month's cover celebrates the start of 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife-a designation made by the World Health Organization (WHO) to honor and advocate for these two essential professions. The photo collage highlights nursing and midwifery practice across settings. As noted by the WHO, nurses and midwives "are the people who devote their lives to caring for mothers and children; giving lifesaving immunizations and health advice; looking after older people. . . . They are often the first and only point of care in their communities." To learn more about the special designation and its implications, read this month's AJN Reports, "The Global Year of the Nurse and Midwife," and listen to a podcast with Pam Cipriano, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the University of Virginia School of Nursing in Charlottesville, past president of the American Nurses Association, and current first vice president of the International Council of Nurses (http://www.ajnonline.com).
Each of AJN's 2020 covers will feature nurses and midwives at work. We're also inviting readers to send us their photos of nurses on the job-they may appear inside a future issue, on our cover, or in an online photo gallery. See the "Nurses: Submit Your Photos!" box on http://www.ajnonline.com for details.-Diane Szulecki, editor
