Update on U.S. cancer rates. Each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with U.S. cancer organizations and registries, publishes a report to the nation on cancer incidence rates, cancer mortality rates, and trends for the most common cancers. The most recent report covers 1999 to 2015, with some 2016 data. Cancer deaths from the most common cancers decreased, although smaller decreases occurred among women than among men. Deaths also decreased in children, but the incidence of pediatric cancers increased. Increases in some cancers were attributed to obesity and physical inactivity. The researchers found a "substantially greater cancer burden" among 20-to-49-year-old women compared with same-age men. A discussion is devoted to cancer trends in young adults.
