Is exercise better than stenting? It may be for some patients, according to a report in the March 23 issue of Circulation. In a small randomized trial of men with stable coronary artery disease, those who followed a one-year program of regular exercise showed greater exercise capacity and event-free survival (at 12 months) than did those who underwent intracoronary stent implantation. The conservative approach also reduced the potential for complications from stent implantation and was also more cost effective. The authors recommend that a larger, multicenter clinical trial be done.
