Consensus panel addresses challenges of using CDC opioid guidelines in practice. Responding to concerns about the dangers of opioid misuse, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidelines in 2016 for prescribing opioids for chronic pain management. Subsequent concerns that the guidelines were sometimes being used inflexibly, such as when providers would abruptly terminate or too-quickly taper medication, led to the creation of a consensus panel that detailed the challenges of using the opioid guidelines in practice. The authors of the CDC guidelines have published an article in the April 24 New England Journal of Medicine that supports the findings of the consensus panel and underscores the importance of implementing the guidelines effectively.
