Endocrine Society releases clinical guideline for treating diabetes in older adults. The comprehensive guideline for treating adults with diabetes who are 65 years and older, published in the May Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, covers screening for diabetes and prediabetes, screening for and treating diabetes complications, treating hyperglycemia (including lifestyle modifications, nutrition, and drug therapy), and prevention. Type 2 diabetes is an age-related disease affecting 33% of the U.S. population 65 years and older, and prevalence is expected to increase dramatically over the next 30 years, according to the guideline. And with improving life expectancy, the number of older patients with type 1 diabetes is also expected to increase over the next decade.
