New Jersey becomes the seventh state to enact assisted suicide legislation. In April, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act, which allows terminally ill adults to "obtain and self-administer medication to end their lives peacefully and humanely," according to Governor Murphy's statement on signing the bill. Laws making physician-assisted suicide legal have been enacted in six other states. Oregon was the first to enact such a law in 1997, followed by California, Colorado, Hawaii, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia. The New Jersey law goes into effect in August.
